I Am Definitely an Obama Girl
There is no question that Obama and his family have been a huge positive for black families in America. To me it is as though the Fresh Prince has come alive in President Obama. He is a black man in power with a black woman not behind him but by his side with their children there portraying an image that has never been seen in my generation. Its everything about Obama that makes us as a people feel right at home with him, whether it be how he handles himself so smooth like Denzel in a debate or questions from the media... or the way he takes time to have funa nd play basketball with the UNC Tar Heels. Obama not only portrays a strong black family but also showing others that it is possible to be a strong black man with a strong black woman and have a loving family in the public eye.
Thinking More about African American Society and Culture
I have experienced all three of these positive institutions, and all provide a great sense of belonging and positivity. The church gives Black people a sense of spirituality in a sense that everything happens for a reason and what you do when no one is watching is just as important as when everyone else is around. HBCU's and greek organizations is a great tool in leading our young black youth in the right direction and making them feel as though they are apart of something special. The leaders of all three, the church, greek life and HBCU's help the youth in broading their minds and opening doors for a better life by not only educating but also by creating job opportunites. A great positive that these institues possess is that they all remind and teach us about where we have come from and how to improve our situation as a whole, and as far as racism... it will always exist and the only thing to do is to use these sources as a positive and overcome something that all blacks have to go through at some point their life.
Making Privilege and Power Visible
I think that it is true to a certain extent that black women do not have a name for themselves. Only because some of our beautiful African American females choose to shake they a** in videos and put up with being called h** and B****. In no way shape or form do I condone this behavior, but in our society today black males lead the charge in disrepecting our black women so how can we as a people strive for and want change for black women if we don't practice the change ourselves. In my daily life I see more black women than white posing half naked in videos and portraying a image that does not exist. As the stereotype grows about black women having huge butts and a** shakers I see in our young female youth the same thing I see on television... and that is special inappropriate dances and booty poppin while the parents of these children cheer them on as if nothing is wrong. Black women have come a long way from caring for their white masters chidren and caring for their houoseholds, but somewhere in the evolution of black women something went wrong and exploitation of their beautiful bodies is the new thing to do and be apart of in order to have fun and live life.
